There aren’t many things that I’ve been consistently able to stay interested in, but writing’s always been one of them. Followed by music and, thanks to the awesomeness that was Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, anime and manga. As a writer, I have over 15 years of experience working in the journalism, marketing, and higher education fields.
I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2005 with a Bachelor of Journalism (news editorial) and a minor in English. Following graduation, I worked as a copy editor and page designer for a medium-sized Lee-owned newspaper in Central Illinois. In 2010, I spontaneously moved to England, where I earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative and Critical W riting from the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham. I spent 18 months living in the UK, focusing on critical analysis of literature and creative writing. My dissertation included a 14,000-word story that focused on the theme of dreams and “Magical Realism” as used by one of my favorite authors, Haruki Murakami.
When I returned to the States, I worked as a marketing assistant at a community college. Fourteen months later, I became the copywriter for a four-year private university in the same city. Besides providing the content for all of the university’s printed and digital materials, I manage the social media accounts: Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn. I proofread, too, and am a passionate supporter of the Oxford comma, which is why I will never be a fan of Vampire Weekend.
On the side, I like to do freelance writing for newspapers, magazines, and other projects. My personal hobbies – besides music and travel – mostly fall under a category some might refer to as “nerd”. I like comics, manga, anime, video games, and sci-fi/fantasy series. I like to go to Comic Cons and anime conventions, which is why I have a pile of fanart I’ve yet to frame or hang anywhere. Career goals include finding a job where I can combine my talents with my favorite hobbies or interests.
My biggest strengths are my experience, adaptability, work ethic, honesty, and team collaboration skills.
